The Swedish company Global Elect announced on Tuesday an exclusive collaboration agreement with the five children considered heirs of Diego Armando Maradona to market products under the brand of the Argentine star who died in 2020.
“Under the framework of this long-term agreement, Electa will be responsible for all aspects related to product design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution, in close coordination with the family”The company indicated this Tuesday in a statement.
“There are not many official Maradona products”said the Swedish-Iranian businessman Ash Pournouriowner of Elect, in an interview with AFP.
“This is partly because it was not done during his lifetime and, since his death, his family and children have not wanted to do anything with anyone. It has taken time to gain their trust”he explained.
The legendary Argentine number 10 died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 due to pulmonary edema while recovering at home from neurosurgery.
“Our father’s name has immense meaning for millions of people around the world”said his heirs, cited in the statement Elect.
“It’s not just about products (…) It’s about preserving who Diego was: his passion, his energy and his love for people”they added.
Initially, high-end clothing, shoes and accessories will be designed for the European market.
Last month, the Argentine Justice seized assets of two sisters of Maradona, of his lawyer and three other people for alleged fraudulent administration of the football legend’s brand.
A court of second instance Buenos Aires ordered to prosecute the defender of Maradona, Matias Morlaand two of his assistants for alleged fraudulent administration of the brand “Diego Maradona” and its derivatives that, according to his children, should have been transferred to them after death.
The ruling ordered that the assets, tangible or not, be passed “immediately into the property of his heirs.”
