The relationship between Torino and River Plate

The link between both clubs was born in 1949, after the Superga air tragedyin which 31 people died, including 18 players from the legendary “Grande Torino”, the team that dominated Italian football at the time. Upon learning of the accident, the then president of River, Antonio Vespucio Libertiorganized a trip to Turin with the figures of “La Maquina”—Di Stéfano, Labruna, Carrizo and Pipo Rossi, among others—to play a charity match whose proceeds went to the families of the victims.

That match, played on May 26, 1949 before almost 60,000 people, ended 2-2. But the result was the least important. What was recorded was the solidarity gesture of an Argentine club that crossed the Atlantic to accompany another in its worst moment. Since then, the relationship has been kept alive with mutual tributes: River wore maroon t-shirts in his honor, while Torino made a white one with a maroon band, in the image of Núñez’s team.

Decades later, both clubs consolidated their brotherhood in official museums and in different institutional visits. Every May 4, on the anniversary of the tragedy, River usually sends offerings or messages remembering Grande Torino.

The new Torino shirt

The t-shirt presented this week was designed by Joma and is now available in the club’s official store. On the inside of the neck, a message remembers the friendship between both institutions. On the back, the two intertwined shields summarize a story that goes beyond football: a story of empathy, memory and mutual respect.

For many fans, this new jacket is more than a garment: it is a symbolic piece that unites generations. Some see it as a way to keep history alive; others, as a demonstration that football can still be a bridge between peoples. The truth is that Torino and River achieved something rare in modern sport: that a bond born of pain continues to be a source of pride and tribute almost eight decades later.
