Thomas Müller talks about life in Canada without his wife Lisa

Former Bayern star Thomas Müller has been living in Canada since the summer, without his wife or family. He actually feels very comfortable, but in an interview he also finds thoughtful words.

Thomas Müller is currently thriving in Canada: at his new club, the Vancouver Whitecaps, the 36-year-old former national soccer player has played a key role. “Things are going extremely well so far,” Müller told Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) before the start of the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs.

Things are going well in terms of sport, but his private life looks completely different in North America than in Munich. His wife, family and friends still live in Germany while Müller is spending the autumn of his career on the other side of the Atlantic.

Thomas Müller: “I wouldn’t say I miss it”

As part of his move, the former FC Bayern star told “Bild” in August that his wife Lisa would stay at home because of her equestrian career. The fact that he went to Vancouver without her sparked rumors.

When asked whether he missed her, his family and his environment, Müller replied in the BR interview: “I wouldn’t say I miss it. I don’t like that word that much. You always have a choice and I consciously chose the adventure, I really enjoy it.” The 36-year-old explained that he maintains contact by telephone or video call.

Sometimes he does feel lonely

Müller also looked at his first few months in an interview with the “Abendzeitung München” (AZ). Canada back. He gave private insights and found slightly different words. The distance from home sometimes makes him thoughtful. When asked if he was lonely, the professional footballer said: “Sometimes a little bit.”

Müller knew what to expect, “but if you live with the nine-hour time difference in this direction, it doesn’t fit well with the time in Germany.”

The daily rhythm collides with German time, especially in the morning hours. “When training is finished, it’s quickly 2 p.m. – at home it’s already 11 p.m.,” said Müller.

“The best way for me to have the opportunity to talk on the phone for longer with family and friends is before games on the weekend. That’s a difference that you have to get used to when you have to be so careful about when you can call someone,” Müller continued. But he also sees an advantage in this: “On the other hand, it’s not bad either, because then you get more involved in life here.”

Apparently visiting home in December

Thomas Müller was already visiting home in September – for organizational reasons, as he himself said. He also paid a visit to his old teammates at FC Bayern trained with the new beard look on Säbener Straße.

“I will be back in Germany in December,” he announced. The current MLS season officially ends with the MLS Cup final on December 6th. Müller should then return home at the latest. The subsequent break was comparatively generous at six to eight weeks, which is why Müller rates his first year in North America itself as “relatively soft”.
