The Australian Piastri, who had started the race in seventh place and 14 points ahead of the Briton, finished fifth.
Charles Leclerc was second for Ferrari, 30.3 seconds behind Norris, while reigning Red Bull champion Max Verstappen took his sixth consecutive podium in third after a thrilling finish just 0.7 seconds behind the Monegasque.
Oliver Bearman was fourth for Haas in the British driver’s career-best result, after a virtual safety car at the end ended Piastri’s hopes of overtaking him.
