The French finished at the top for the first time in her 127th World Cup race, winning 0.38s ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA. Federica Brignone was enough for ninth place to win the Super-G crystal ball early, for the ÖSV women it was a heavy defeat.
Vlhova had recently caught up with Shiffrin, who was missing there, in the overall standings in Crans Montana. In Lenzerheide, her trainer Mauro Pini set an extremely turning and demanding Super-G with narrow gate distances, despite the already difficult terrain and a pimply hard slope. However, the attempt to favor Vlhova with a course similar to giant slalom failed.
Because while Vlhova, like many others, had enormous problems and was only 18th, 3.31 seconds behind, Shiffrin, who returned after the Olympic disaster, mastered the course much smarter and, above all, more sensitively immediately after her. Second behind Miradoli, the American, whose biggest goal of the season is to win the big World Cup ball, extended her lead in the overall standings to 67 points. A giant slalom follows on Sunday.
In any case, tennis superstar Roger Federer saw a strange race at the finish line in glorious weather and full spectator stands. The first three runners were eliminated, they were all Austrians with Mirjam Puchner, Ariane Rädler and Tamara Tippler. Overall, only five of the first ten starters made it into the ranking.
Miradoli was at the top for the first time at the end of the race without Sofia Goggia (concentrating on the final) or the strong Austrian Cornelia Hütter. “I can’t believe it. It really wasn’t easy to ski well today,” said the Frenchwoman, who had never been better than fifth in the World Cup before.
The second World Cup bullet for women after that in the slalom at Vlhova was awarded in a curious way. This was due to the fall of Elena Curtoni, which made Federica Brignone the winner of the Super-G before she even started. It is the fifth ball overall for the Italian, the first in Super-G. “It’s fantastic. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good race today,” Brignone was not unreservedly happy about.
The debacle for the ÖSV women became apparent in the first race after it became known that racing director Christian Mitter would leave the team at the end of the season due to the early failures. After 20 riders, Ramona Siebenhofer was the only one to finish and she was last, 4.30 seconds behind. In the end it was Ricarda Haaser, coming with a high number 38, who, as the last of all ÖSV starters, made 12th for the best ÖSV placement. Stephanie Venier was 15th, Nadine Fest 24th and Siebenhofer 27th.
