Karim Benzema delivers a gala against Paris Saint-Germain. His first goal caused discussions, but the French spoke plainly.
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has defended his role in the much-discussed first goal in his club’s 3-1 Champions League win over PSG.
The Frenchman had almost single-handedly propelled Los Blancos into the Champions League quarter-finals but his 1-0 lead had caused an uproar as Benzema put pressure on PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and even brought down the Italian. Many observers were surprised that the scene was not rated as a foul.
Benzema explains situation before his first goal
PSG sporting director Leonardo said: “Of course it’s not an excuse, but it was a foul on Donnarumma.”
“That was nothing. No foul. Just pressing,” Benzema contradicted after the game on the French TV station Canal +. “He should have kicked the ball away. He waits and waits and ends up losing the ball,” said the Real attacker.
When asked if this would be Benzema said: “It was only a round of 16, but for me personally it was exceptional.”
