Former WWE Champion Big E broke his neck in a match on Friday night. A short time later, the 36-year-old reported with a video message from the hospital.
What looks like daring tackles and brutal maneuvers in wrestling is usually “more appearance than reality” and merely staged. That’s why nobody expected anything bad when the wrestler Big E fell to the ground after a maneuver during the WWE live show “SmackDown” on Friday evening.
Big E and Kofi Kingston teamed up against Sheamus and Ridge Holland in the show’s opening match. During the fight, Holland performs an overhead belly-to-belly suplex outside of the ring, a throwing action that places the opponent backwards onto the mat over his own head. Big E landed on his head and neck instead of on his back and lay motionless on the ground.

Kofi climbed out of the ring to join his badly injured teammate. Paramedics rushed in and spent minutes treating the former WWE Champion. Eventually, he was wheeled out on a stretcher with his head and neck restrained. The viewers in front of the television did not notice any of the dramatic scenes from the hall during the further live broadcast.
As a result, Big E, real name Ettore Ewen, was taken to a hospital. From there he reported on Saturday with a video message on Instagram – with good news.

Blessing in disguise
Two of his cervical vertebrae, the C1 and C6 vertebrae, were broken but not displaced, “which is a very good thing,” says the wrestler. His spinal cord was unharmed in the fall. Fortunately, an operation is not necessary to repair the damage.
The 36-year-old was already joking in the video: “A pro tip: if you ever want to break your neck, do it in Birmingham. the people here [das Krankenhaus-Team] are great.”
