Travel yes, play no: Ex-SGE striker Luka Jovic received the maximum penalty on Monday evening.
Luka Jovic has hit a new low at Real Madrid. Before the Serbian striker received the next blow from coach Carlo Ancelotti: Jovic traveled to Mallorca with the royal retinue, but was dropped from the squad by Ancelotti around two hours before the game.
Background: Real traveled to the away game with a total of 25 players – knowing full well that in addition to the third keeper Antonio Fuidias, another player has to be in the stands. According to the statutes, in addition to the eleven players in the starting formation, only twelve other players are allowed to sit on the bench. Ancelotti chose Jovic.
Jovic is under contract with Real Madrid until 2025
The 24-year-old will not be on the pitch for a single minute in his sixth competitive game in a row. While Ancelotti had said in November last year that he liked Jovic and that the striker knew it, it is now becoming increasingly clear that this is no longer the status quo. In January, Ancelotti is said to have even vetoed a change. In the meantime, the signs are pointing more than ever to separation in the summer.
It would be the premature (contract until 2025) but understandable end of a relationship that never seemed to work properly. Jovic joined Los Blancos in 2019 after outstanding performances from Eintracht Frankfurt for 63 million euros. He has only scored three goals in 49 competitive games for Real and has never really made it beyond his role as a backup player.
Real Madrid: Jovic’s loan to Eintracht fizzles out without any positive effect
In January 2021, he should gain new self-confidence and match practice with a temporary return to Eintracht, who loaned him out for six months. In 18 games, Jovic scored four times for the Hessians and then returned to Real, where he again did not get beyond the role of Benzema backup.
Jovic’s best game of the season to date came against Real Sociedad in early December, when he had to replace the injured Benzema after just 17 minutes and added a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win.
