Roman Bürki leaves Borussia Dortmund after the end of the season. The Swiss moves to a new club in the United States.
The move from BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki to the USA is perfect. As the club announced on Wednesday, the 31-year-old Swiss will join future MLS team St. Louis City SC in the summer. The franchise will start playing in 2023, the sports director there is the former goalkeeper and Düsseldorf sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel.
“It was an honor for me to have played for this great club for a total of seven years. I will always remember not only the cup victories in 2017 and 2021, but all the good and difficult times we experienced together,” said Bürki . The 31-year-old’s contract with BVB, which runs until 2025, will be terminated at the end of the season.
BVB: Zorc praises Bürki in the highest tones
Bürki moved from SC Freiburg to Dortmund in 2015 and was number one there for years. So far he has made 232 appearances for the black and yellow. Last season, however, he initially lost his place as a regular to Marwin Hitz, this season Bürki no longer plays a role after Gregor Kobel, also from Switzerland, was signed.
Dortmund’s sports director Michael Zorc thanked Bürki “for seven years in which he always gave everything. Roman was our number 1 for many years, he is a well-deserved BVB professional, has won titles with us and is with the DFB Cup around the Borsigplatz driven. These titles, these moments, will always be associated with him,” he said.
In the past year and a half, Bürki has “always behaved professionally and put himself at the service of the team. We wish Roman all the best for his professional and private future in the USA”.
