More than a surfer, the 10-time Argentine longboard champion is an artist. At 37 years old, his charisma and skill make him a romantic in this sport. And in this competition, of course, he was in his sauce. That is why he was not surprised that, at the end of the event, one of the 10 children of Daniel Gilpioneer of surfing in the country, was the winner of both categories, the Noseriding and the Expression Session.
Evelyn Gontier, also highly experienced and with a style along the same lines, was the best among the women after winning the first discipline and being second in the other. Amparo Errecalde, an 18-year-old jewel, prevailed in the female Expression Session. The three were the big winners of a competition that, in reality, was much more than that, exhibiting an amateur spirit, friendship, camaraderie and prioritizing art, style, fluidity on the board, what this discipline proposes. of long boards that has become fashionable again after the boom of shortboards.
To complete this aura of love and passion, it must be said that the Single Fest was held in Kikiwai, the mythical beach next to the Parador Waikiki -from the Mirador the judges scored-, and organized by the Kikiwai Surf Club and the Academia Argentina de Surf. There were 18 competitors, both young promises and exponents of the discipline at an international level. A tournament that had a new format in which the participants shone in the waves of Punta Cantera.
It delivered 130,000 pesos in prize money and was again presented by Chevrolet, which confirms the quality of this event. With the collaboration of several brands (Ohana Tienda Natural, Buluc, Taller de Arte Amarte and Tramontana) and with an award dinner at Roots. There were raffles, music by Lucila Las Joyas and the art was provided by Rocío Gil, doing body painting to people on the beach.
“The event was great. Something new in Argentina, with a different format. We all ran the same amount of heat which made it fun for everyone. I won because I read the rules well, to see what the judges wanted, and second for having surfed at this point between 12 and 28 years old and knowing all the nooks and crannies. The wave became difficult and it was key to choose well which way to go. It is a place for rights, but the best scores were lefts. I walked well on the boards and got a couple of hangs (hang five).
In the Expression Session it was the same. I read the rules, I saw that you could play with the fins and the board. There I played it to go by Helicopter 360 °, which was the best maneuver. Observing the waves and knowing what could be done led me to victory”, analyzed Danny, who always rescued the wave of the event. “Still, the nicest thing was meeting all the longboarders and not having as much pressure as in the qualifiers. There was a lot of wave”he completed with his usual sympathy.
The tournament sought to reward the surfer’s style while walking the board, taking neat steps, with the essence of staying as much as possible on the nose of the board (hang 5 or hang 10) while surfing the wave with hands on the waist or with relaxed and elegant postures. The format was inspired by both the new traditional surfing events or Loggers as well as the SLS events in the world skate league, with each board member having the opportunity to run three runs, over seven minutes.
In the Expression Session, being able to do tricks was added, as some tried, standing on one foot, sitting, lying down or headfirst on the board, or simply surfing with the board inverted. Precisely Kikiwai is the ideal beach for that, meeting all the conditions for noseriding: long, smooth and even waves that break on sand and rocks. A different tournament, with the usual wave and essence in longboards, seeking to promote a trend that is growing in the sea: art on the boards.
