How much time does the Professional Football League have left?

In the face of all this process, which began on June 27, 2017 with the founding of the Super League, created with the supposed objective of improving the economic and sports administration of the competition, but stripping the maneuver of the then President of the Nation Mauricio Macri, to implement sports corporations in Argentine soccer, until now, everything suggests that the LPF’s days are numbered. On Wednesday of last week, the deadline for the presentation of the list to participate in the electoral act closed and the only one that appeared has several leaders in its main positions -including Malaspina- who are members of the current board of directors led by Tinelli and that at the end of last year they began an operation to remove the businessman and television host from power.

This list is endorsed by a single team of the so-called big five: Independiente. That is to say that among his main positions are not Boca, River, Racing and San Lorenzo. Malaspina is seconded by Héctor Maldonado (Independent) as 1st Vice President; José Alonso (Colón), vice 2nd; David Garzón (Hurricane), third vice; Hernán Arboleya (Lanús), secretary, and Edgardo Zin (Colón), assistant secretary. Last December, Tinelli classified as a coup that Malaspina and his company wanted to remove him from power. Now it was striking that a unit list that was going to be led by the head of Racing, Víctor Blanco, had not prospered and that, at the last minute, the list that Mario Leito from Tucuman (promoted by River and supported by Boca ) did not show up.

Although Malaspina only has the endorsement of Independiente, among the big clubs, Malaspina managed to have the direct support of the president of the AFA, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, from the outset. He also has the backing of La Cámpora, although not the rest of the Frente de Todos. Although it will be difficult for him to govern the LPF without the endorsement of the greats, it will also be difficult for him to take the helm of the ship because it was foreseeable that after what happened with Tinelli last Christmas, the businessman and entertainer was not going to give up and was going to charge against Malaspina.

Because of these disagreements and because of those words of the owner of Boca, at the beginning of 2020, when he assured that he preferred that football be handled by the AFA and that the “double command was not serious” everything suggests that the Professional League has a time of life limited.

Tinelli, on the attack

The challenge of the election act of the LPF presented before the Justice by Tinelli undoubtedly puts in check the assumption of Malaspina. The reasons put forward by Tinelli for the request to annul the electoral process are the validity of the mandate of the authorities of the Board of Directors (until 2023), the non-inclusion of the consideration of the management in the points on the agenda of the Assembly, the not yet dissolution of the Superliga -which continues to exercise functions-, the non-presentation of all the requirements of all the candidates and even a bad inclusion.

In relation to the irregularities of the candidates, the presentation argues that “the only list that was presented in this electoral process invalidated, its candidates have not met the minimum requirements to be admitted as such.” The note raised to Justice emphasizes that each of the candidates failed to provide and prove key information stipulated in the general regulations of the LPF such as criminal records or proof of the absence of bankruptcies and contests.

In addition, he denounces the poor inclusion of Hernán Arboleya, who is currently a substitute member in Lanús after two terms in which he was first deputy secretary and later vice president, during the last two presidencies of Nicolás Russo. Apparently, the statutes of Lanús do not coincide with those of the LPF, while the institution “Granate” prevents its leaders from remaining for more than two terms in titular positions, the regulations of the League require that the members of the Board of Directors be members holders of the directive commissions of their clubs.

Therefore, Arboleya cannot be a regular member of the Lanús Commission until December 2024 and, therefore, cannot be part of the League’s Board of Directors either. After making the presentation to the Justice and sending a letter to the AFA, Tinelli sent a letter to each of the presidents of the First Division clubs, in which he expressed his concern about the institutional coup that, according to his position, began in December, calling it ‘devious’.

On the other hand, he made it clear that he will not appear in any position in the League when there is a renewal of authorities. However, he pointed out that he cannot leave office without considering the management of the current leadership. “I see with great concern that decisions are made without consulting the Executive Committee of the LPF, such as the non-draw of the referees, precisely on such a special date as the Clásico. Also, starting next week with the controversial implementation of the necessary VAR in Argentine football, there will also be no referee draws,” he wrote.

And he added: “I take this opportunity to return to the letter of July 27, 2021 in which the issue of VAR and referee appointments was a request made unanimously by all the leaders of the First Division. With this decision made in the last few hours, the request of the clubs is turned back.” To conclude, Tinelli pointed out that the electoral process “must be legitimate, transparent and comply with all the corresponding steps” and that he will communicate with each of the presidents individually.

The LPF lives its most chaotic moment. It is up to the leaders of the First Division to continue promoting it or to sign, one by one, its death certificate.
