Paris, the glory and the tragedy in the life of Federico Martín Aramburu

Born in La Plata, he started out in rugby at Club Atlético de San Isidro (CASI), one of the two greats along with SIC, where he made his debut in 1999.

Like other rugbiers, he emigrated looking for professionalism, and ended up at Biarritz Olympique (2004-2006), then Perpignan (2006-2008), Dax (2008-2010), Glasgow Warriors (2010-2012), and there he returned to Argentina, to retire at CASI, where he played just one season.

But it was in 2007 that he was remembered, even by non-regular rugby fans, with a performance that took Argentina to third place, with a resounding victory over France, which included a try from him, entering wing position. Precisely, Aramburu always served as a wing or center, within the three-quarter range. In that squad, captain Agustín Pichot and fly-half Juan Martín Hernández stood out.

Once retired, what has been said: he returned to Biarritz, a city located in the southwest of France, where he set up a travel and tourism organization to and from South America, Eurolatina.

This morning, as reported, he was at the Mabillon bar with two friends, Shaun Hegarty (his business partner) and Marcelo Bosch, also a former Puma.

In the place, a brawl would have broken out with two other clients and there were several blows, until it all ended when one of them showed a weapon. It seemed that everything would remain in that, but no: Aramburu, when he was walking through Saint Germain, in the heart of Paris, was attacked with bullets by a subject – it is presumed that he was the one who was in the bar – who shot him several times from a vehicle.

He died almost immediately. By the fact there is already a detainee. Aramburu had tickets to see today’s match between France and England for the 6 Nations. It can no longer be. Instead, there will be a minute of silence. That’s how tragic life can be.
