Especially on days like these, the lower house football shows its unique face again: The love for the round leather not only connects numerous Upper Austrians every week – as a community you also stand up for those who are currently not doing as well as those people who live in in the past few days and weeks, because of the war in Ukraine, have had to witness the sight of suffering and horror in their home country.
Which is why it was immediately clear to numerous amateur clubs: we want to set an example. Such as state league club SC Marchtrenk. “We are a social association and have already organized campaigns for the homeless. It was immediately clear that we also want to help the people in Ukraine,” says Jürgen Seiler, a youth coach at SC, whose club collects food and toys and donations in kind. A bus full of donations is already on its way to Ukraine.
Gestures with symbolic power
The district league south club Union Schlierbach also came up with a sign: yesterday’s opening duel against Frankenburg was themed “home game of peace”. In addition to a donation box, there was also the opportunity to donate the use of beverage cups. In addition, as a sign of solidarity, the Ukrainian colors adorned the corner flags on the sports field.
With a Ukraine flag and two kits from the Ukrainian national team, Upper Austria league club St. Martin/Mühlkreis also showed solidarity at the spring start of the highest league in the state. “The partner of a friend of mine comes from the Ukraine. Her relatives are in the middle of the front. It’s unimaginable what’s happening there,” said St. Martin’s coach Dominik Nimmervoll. Which is why the people of Mühlviertel wanted to make a small gesture: “Everyone immediately agreed, that’s what distinguishes our team and our club.” Not only the Mühlviertler collected sympathy points: Kremsmünster, Haidershofen and numerous other lower house associations recently set a sign for peace with various actions.
