At the end of February, Russian teams were banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions. Nevertheless, the RFU is probably applying to hold an EM.
The Russian Football Association RFU has apparently submitted the application documents for the 2028 and 2032 European Championships. “The Executive Committee has decided that we will apply to host the Euro 2028 and Euro 2032,” Sergey Anokhin from the RFU Executive Committee told the Russian daily Sports Express quoted.
The application period for the two tournaments ended on Wednesday. The associations of Ireland and Great Britain, among others, have applied for the EM 2028. UEFA would like to inform about possible other candidates at the beginning of April.

The next final round will take place in Germany in 2024 with 24 participants. There is already speculation about an expansion of the starting field to 32 teams. That would be well over half of the 55 UEFA member associations.
Already last summer, Russia’s former World Cup organizer Alexey Sorokin submitted an application. “It’s difficult for me to speak for my colleagues from the Russian Football Union. But I think that would be very logical. An independent application would be appropriate given our infrastructure readiness and our experience,” the 49-year-old told the daily in June Sports Express.
The intention to organize an EM tournament in 2028 or 2032 comes as a surprise in the current context. . The ban also affects the World Cup in Qatar next November.
