Brothers be united: the Cerúndolo successfully debuted in Miami

Francisco, the oldest of the brothers, beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 25 minutes, in a match in which he hit seven aces. In the second round he will face the American giant Reilly Opelka, sixteenth favorite.

This was the oldest of the brothers’ first Masters 1000 win and first this year on hard court.

Later, his brother Juan Manuel also started with a success over the Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-3 and 7-5. Juan Manuel will face Italian Matteo Berrettini, fourth seed, in the second round.

In the women’s WTA 1000, the Japanese Naomi Osaka debuted with a win over Australian Astra Sharma in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Osaka’s opponent in the second round will be German veteran Angelique Kerber, the thirteenth seed.

Osaka, who looked much recovered, revealed that she started working with a therapist to deal with the issues that led her to walk out in tears at Indian Wells earlier this month.

The Japanese star, who took time out of the sport in 2021 due to mental health issues, sought help after struggling to deal with interruptions in California during her loss to Veronika Kudermetova.

The four-time Grand Slam champion showed tremendous poise on this day at Hard Rock Stadium to beat World No.96 Sharma.
