Sergio Pérez, who had to retire painfully on the last lap of the season-opening race in Bahrain due to an engine failure when he was running third, thus regains his smile and places himself as a strong candidate for victory on Sunday.

The 32-year-old driver, who made his Formula 1 debut in 2011, had not taken any pole so far in the competition but did win two races, in Sakhir (Bahrain) in 2020 and in Baku (Azerbaijan) in 2021. He will now aspire to climb to the top of the podium for the third time.

This Saturday’s qualifying session at the Jeddah circuit was marked by a violent accident of Mick Schumacher (Haas) in Q2 and also by the surprise elimination in Q1 of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).

Hamilton had the 16th fastest time in Q1, with the top 15 entering Q2. The English driver hadn’t been eliminated in a qualifying session so early since the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix.
