The Tokyo Summer Olympics are among the most costly of all time. The capital of Japan made the event cost at least 30 billion US dollars.
“Expensive, expensive, Tokyo” was the headline of the “Tagesschau” in its online edition about the Summer Olympics in 2021. According to this, the originally planned 7.5 billion US dollars have now grown to 30 billion US dollars. “One reason for the cost explosion is the postponement of the games by a year and the additional corona protective measures.”

This makes Tokyo one of the most expensive Olympic Games of all time in 2021, as a glance at the shows. Only the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing and the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, have been more expensive so far. The last two summer editions of Olympia were about half as expensive. For a sporting event that is largely denied, that is a considerable mortgage – in Japan, for example, 78 percent say that the Summer Olympics should not take place in 2021.
