Sad news from Belgium: A former first division keeper from Cercle Brugge has died after a serious illness.
Belgian football mourns the loss of Miguel Van Damme: the former goalkeeper lost a battle with leukemia and died at the age of 28. This was announced by his club Cercle Brugge.
“Words are not enough to describe how we feel, even though we knew things hadn’t been going well for a while,” the club wrote on its website. It was a very difficult day in the club’s almost 123-year history.
Cercle on Van Damme: “Admirable”
Van Damme was diagnosed with blood cancer in the summer of 2016. He leaves behind a wife and a daughter who was born in May last year. The club expressed its condolences to the family.
“Miguel, your perseverance and your strength to try (again) despite all the setbacks are admirable,” the club statement continued. “You are an example of positivism, perseverance and fighting spirit. An inspiration to anyone who fights.”
Van Damme had repeatedly fought for a comeback after his cancer diagnosis. Since then he has played five times for Cercle, he played his last game on May 17, 2019. In 2014 he moved to Bruges at the age of 20.
