It has been clear for some time that Roger Schmidt will not continue at PSV Eindhoven. Now it is clear where he will work in the future.

Roger Schmidt from PSV Eindhoven is apparently about to move to Portugal. According to a media report, the German coach will take over Benfica in the summer.

He reports that table football on Tuesday. Accordingly, there have already been several positive talks with those responsible for the Portuguese. A signature is imminent, as the trade magazine reports.

This would see Schmidt succeed Jorge Jesus, who was sacked in December and only took over Benfica in August 2020. Nelson Verissimo is currently in charge, having previously worked for the club as an assistant coach and youth coach on several occasions.

Three titles still possible for Roger Schmidt this season

Schmidt announced his departure from PSV Eindhoven at the end of the season in February, and since then it has been unclear how things will continue for the 55-year-old. Among other things, he is said to have been a candidate for the then vacant coaching post at RB Leipzig, but canceled the Saxons in December to fulfill his contract in Eindhoven.

The reigning runners-up in the Netherlands can theoretically still win three titles this season with PSV. In the league they are only two points behind Ajax after 27 matchdays and also meet the capital club in the cup final. In addition, PSV is in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League, the next opponent is Leicester City from the English Premier League.

Schmidt has been training Eindhoven since 2020 and before that he worked at RB Salzbug and Bayer Leverkusen, among others.
