Zinsberger out with Arsenal in the Women’s Champions League

After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, the return match in Germany on Thursday was 0-2 from the London team’s point of view. With goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and Laura Wienroither (from the 79th minute) it was also the end of the line for two Austrians. Jill Roord (9′) and Leah Williamson (73’/own goal), who unluckily steered the ball through Zinsberger’s legs, scored.

Roord scored against her former team after a tumult in the penalty area following a corner kick. With her back to the goal, the Dutchwoman pushed the ball in. In the second half, Wolfsburg managed the result cleverly, Arsenal acted too harmless offensively. With Williamson’s own goal, the chances of a happy ending in the Volkswagen Arena further diminished.

In the semi-finals, the “wolves” now face FC Barcelona. Barca had beaten Real Madrid 5-2 at home in the Spanish “Clasico” the day before – in front of a record crowd of 91,553 spectators at the Camp Nou. More had never been in the stadium at a women’s soccer match.
