Peter Stöger is ready to become ÖFB team boss

Peter Stöger confirmed his interest in the vacant post of ÖFB team boss on Sunday, as well as contact with sports director Peter Schöttel. “If he wants it, then the job is interesting for me,” said Stöger, who is currently working as an expert for the Sky TV channel, on Sunday as part of the top Bundesliga game between Salzburg and Rapid to “Sky”.

“We exchanged ideas. I gave my assessment of what I saw from the outside. He then talked a bit about what he saw on the inside,” said Stöger about the conversation with Schöttel, whose side he used to be in the national team and kicked at Rapid. “That was it. It was also clear that there would be talks with many other coaches.”

Stöger about the team boss requirements

Stöger, the last master maker of Wiener Austria (2013), described the requirement profile for the new ÖFB team boss as follows: “The most important thing for a coach who has to make decisions in a short time is the next opponent and in a few days he has completely different qualities at his disposal, he has to see what he has at his disposal and which guys are really in a good mood. He also has to be a very flexible coach in his thoughts and in his way of thinking. That’s something that many coaches can do, and when it comes to implementation, the dog often lies buried.”

Stöger did not want to go into detail about the discussion about the direction of the game, which was brought up not least by Schöttel – broken down into possession of the ball versus pressing: “I don’t think you can say we’re pressing ourselves to death or we’re defending ourselves to death, and that’s why we European champions.”

Ruttensteiner probably out of the race

One who would certainly like to, but will most likely not get a chance, is the former ÖFB sports director Willibald Ruttensteiner. After more than 20 years at the ÖFB, he had to make way for Schöttel in autumn 2017, then worked until 2021, among other things, as technical director for the Israel Association. “It was a dismissal, I was offended, it hurt. I was too critical for some people, so there will probably be no conversation,” said Ruttensteiner on the ORF program “Sport am Sonntag”.

Opinion poll: After Franco Foda’s departure, we asked the readers of nachrichten.at who should become ÖFB team boss. Around 3000 votes have been cast so far – Peter Stöger received 444 of them. You too can vote:
