“We did almost everything wrong that can be done wrong,” said LASK trainer Andreas Wieland about the first half in the 0-2 derby against SV Guntamatic Ried. But the mistakes had started before the kick-off – with himself, as he self-critically admitted.
In LASK’s 41st game of the season, he set up the 23rd combination of defenders – debutant Oumar Sako and Yannis Letard did not return the trust: they invited Ried to win the derby. Letard scored into his own goal (4th) and saw red after Sako lost the ball (12th), Sako didn’t bother Marcel Ziegl with his header to make it 2-0 (19th). “It wasn’t the right decision,” says Wieland. He nominated both because of their training performance, “if they don’t perform, it’s largely my fault.”

Passes in depth were enough
The Rieder match plan worked: Balls in depth were enough against Letard and Sako. The approach would not have been adapted to a different cast. “Because the system wouldn’t have changed,” explained coach Robert Ibertsberger. “The issue is not that they are slow, but that they defend extremely well in front and thus give space behind them.”
LASK did not make up for the speed deficit in the most recent transfer periods. It can only be concealed this way – if the people in front build up so much pressure that the opponent has no time for deep passes. LASK was not able to do this. Wieland: “We knew that Ried would be waiting for set pieces and actions in the transition game.” This resulted in both goals – because Letard and Sako made a mistake.
No money from the Austrian pot
The use of the duo not only led to the derby defeat, but also cost money: five legionnaires were in the starting eleven, two sat on the bench – one too many to be able to reach into the Austrian pot in the third accounting period. The approximately 100,000 euros that are now being waived should be brought back in the European Cup. In order to qualify for it in the play-off, better performances and fewer mistakes are needed. Only Altach’s 2-2 equalization in the 96th minute prevented Saturday’s opponent Admira from overtaking LASK.
