Bayern’s change mistakes: good cards to prevent the worst

Kingsley Coman should have been substituted, but Bayern’s team manager programmed the wrong shirt number on the substitution scoreboard. That’s why no player left the field – before the Freiburg referee Christian Dingert pointed out that Bayern had played with one player more than allowed. An unpleasant affair for FC Bayern – who can now refer to one thing in particular in the event of an objection from opponent SC Freiburg: Since the referee team is grossly complicit in the blame, Bayern will hardly be able to end the game 0: 2 on the green table (a 0:3 like we don’t have in Germany, note) lose.

Substitutions are precisely regulated, and the referee team is also instructed not to let a fresh player onto the field until the player who has been substituted has left the field. That didn’t happen. This is what the scenarios look like – assuming that a procedure is opened:

  • 0:2 penalty verification – impossible: In the past, games after mistakes were already penalized with 0:2 or 0:3. For example, when Bayern’s 5-2 win over Frankfurt coach Giovanni Trapattoni, Dietmar Hamann, substituted a player with amateur status. Even when Otto Rehhagel (1998) in Kaiserslautern or Mark van Bommel (Wolfsburg, 2021) had changed once too often, there were defeats by the sports courts afterwards. However, at that time the mistakes were solely the responsibility of the teams.
  • Rescheduling – unlikely: In the event of serious refereeing errors or rule violations, replays are not uncommon. For example, in Innsbruck’s Champions League qualifying game against Lok Moscow (2001), when Moscow ended the game with eleven players, although one player had received two yellow cards. There is also a (small) danger now, since the use of twelve players is generally a serious offence. However, this sanction also seems very harsh in comparison.
  • Fine – probably: Since there is no exact regulation, decisions are made in such cases depending on the situation. Bayern’s 3-1 lead just before the end, the team manager’s lack of intention, who simply displayed the wrong number, which made no player feel addressed – these points can be used as mitigating factors. In addition, there is the responsibility of the referee team and the short time of 17 seconds, which helps Bayern. (haha)
