Marcel Ziegl: The “eternal Rieder” scored the most emotional goal of his career

Marcel Ziegl: The “eternal Rieder” scored the most emotional goal of his career

In the 19th minute, SV Ried director Stefan Nutz circled a free kick on the head of captain Marcel Ziegl, who put the ball into the goal to make it 2-0 for Rieder in the explosive Upper Austria derby against LASK. A hospitable LASK made it 1-0 for Ried with an unfortunate header own goal. A very special goal for the “eternal Rieder”, especially since he is not one of the top scorers at SV Ried.

For the 29-year-old it was the fourth goal in the 229th Bundesliga game for his SV Ried. In total, the captain has played 326 games (nine goals) for SVR. “Because I’ve been with this club for so long, a derby like this is of course particularly explosive for me. That moment after the goal was crazy because I’ve lived through it in my head and my imagination so many times,” says Ziegl in the OÖN interview.

At the age of twelve, Ziegl came from Schörfling am Attersee to the third grade of the Bruckner Hauptschule in Ried. At the age of 13 he switched from the LAZ to the football academy in Ried. Since then, Ziegl has not left the Innviertel. He made his debut for SV Ried at the age of 15 – in a derby against LASK. Ziegl, who has already fought back twice after torn cruciate ligaments, is one of the most loyal players in the Bundesliga.

OÖN: How are you, you had to be replaced shortly before the end due to injury?

I twisted my ankle, I guess a ligament in the ankle might have torn. This injury is nothing new for me, I was treated very well on Sunday. Let’s see how I’m doing in the coming days. I don’t think it’s entirely out of the question that I’ll be back against Hartberg next Saturday. If not, then I want to play against Tirol again a week later.

Ried almost had chances every minute against LASK in the first 20 minutes. Has coach Ibertsberger’s match plan worked out perfectly?

100 percent. We should actually have gone higher because we found an incredible number of rooms. Our plan was to act a little more defensively than we did last time, in order to have more space up front in the transition moments. That’s exactly what we did and it was the key to this important derby win.

How important was your goal to make it 2-0 shortly after two missed penalties?

From a mental point of view, that was definitely the key moment in the game. Despite the red card, the momentum after the two penalties was certainly more with LASK. Because we scored the second goal immediately afterwards, that momentum came back to us very quickly. After we made it 2-0, it wasn’t our best attacking performance anymore, but we played the advantage home confidently and defended very well. This victory in this explosive game gives us a lot of self-confidence for the upcoming challenges.

What do you think of the cup thrown at Stefan Nutz after the 2-0 lead, which resulted in a short break in the game. In Germany, a game was recently canceled after a similar action.

The explosiveness of a derby is important for football itself, but of course that goes too far. Something like that simply has no place on a soccer field. But I don’t want to pour too much fuel on the fire either. For us as a team, after consultation with Stefan Nutz, it was clear that we would go back onto the field to win the derby in a sporting way.

What can you take away from this victory for the important home games against Hartberg and Tirol?

Two opponents at eye level await us. From a tactical point of view, there will certainly be completely different games than against LASK. We want to take further steps towards relegation. The win against LASK definitely gave us a lot of self-confidence. I hope that a lot of fans will come to the stadium against Hartberg and Tirol to push us forward in these important games.
