Cuba announces return to professional boxing after 60 years

“It was what we were waiting for a long time”declared the driver of the national representative, Julio César La Cruz, to the AFP agency.

After the Castro revolution, professional (rented) boxing was abolished and the authorities turned to amateurism, in such a way that Cuba always looked like a power in the Olympic or Pan-American Games, but these same boxers could not appear to compete for professional titles. .

For example, the “dancer” Andy Cruz (26), who won his first Olympic title in Tokyo-2020, declared himself “happy” because now he will be able to compete with “the best boxers in the world” in his category.

According to the Cuban Boxing Federation, the boxers will receive 80% of the income obtained from each fight, while the country faces its worst economic crisis in almost 30 years, due to the impact of the pandemic and the strengthening of the United States embargo.

In 2013, a timid return began with indirect formulas in sports such as baseball, in search of new forms of financing.

The Cubans are confident that there will be no problems of “adaptation” to rented boxing, which in addition to contesting a greater number of rounds, is characterized by being more offensive and by a more forceful blow.

The World Boxing Association (WBA), one of the four most important entities in professional boxing, opened “its doors” to Cubans after learning of the agreement already formalized with Golden Rings Promotions.

The opening to professional boxing can stop an exodus, which registered its most recent episode in March when boxers Kevin Brown and Herich Ruiz left the Cuban delegation that was participating in the Pan American Championship in Ecuador.

The question is whether the US embargo, in place since 1962, will allow Cuban champions to participate in the main professional boxing cards, which are usually organized in that country.
