Romelu Lukaku is having a tough season at Chelsea. His coach sees it that way too, but he still believes in the Belgian’s qualities.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted ahead of the Premier League game at Southampton () that Romelu Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge has not gone according to plan. “Of course the marriage hasn’t gone well so far. We have to admit that,” said Tuchel.
Lukaku, who came from Inter Milan last summer for a fee of 113 million euros, was only able to build on past successful days this season and is therefore heavily criticized. This intensified after the Belgian missed a 100% chance of scoring in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Real Madrid last Wednesday when the score was 3-1.
Tuchel still believes in Lukaku
But Tuchel also emphasized that he has not written off Lukaku for a long time: “He has not destabilized us. He is a professional and has trained very well recently. We bought him because we believed in him and still believe in him.”
So far this season, the 28-year-old striker has scored twelve goals in 36 competitive games.
