Christopher Nkunku is playing the season of his life, but it probably didn’t go down well with Manchester United – to the chagrin of Ralf Rangnick.
For Ralf Rangnick, his involvement with Manchester United apparently began with a negative surprise. The German coach, who took over the Red Devils in December 2021 as the successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, had to realize that one of the best players in the Bundesliga was not worth the scouts of the English record champions.
At least that’s what it reports ESPN-Journalist Mark Ogden in a YouTube interview at Stretford Padock. Specifically, it was about RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku. Rangnick wanted to hear the reports from United scouts about the Frenchman – and according to Ogden, he shook his head with the amazing statement: “He’s not on our list.”
Because of Nkunku: Rangnick stunned by United scouts
Nkunku had scored seven goals in six games in the Champions League group stage at the time, including a hat-trick in a 3-6 draw at United’s local rivals Manchester City. Rangnick is said to have been correspondingly stunned. “Come on, this is the best young player in Germany at the moment, he will soon be a France international. He scores a lot of goals. This is a player everyone knows about,” quoted Ogden Rangnick.
It is unclear whether Nkunku will find their way to the island in the summer. The 24-year-old is having an outstanding season at Leipzig and was involved in 29 goals in 28 appearances in the Bundesliga alone. He recently made his debut for the national team. Above all, his ex-club Paris Saint-Germain is traded as an interested party. Nkunku’s contract in Leipzig runs until the summer of 2024, with a transfer fee likely to be in the region of 70 million euros.
