Goodbye to a historic national basketball player: Lamas announced his retirement as coach

“Hello everyone! I want to announce that I have decided to retire and stop directing basketball professionally. I go through this moment with great emotion and the desire to thank”announced the now former coach through his official Twitter account.

He then began with the thanks to whom I consider to be the fundamental pillars for his career: “My mother, María Vicenta, who gave me everything and took care of me; León Najnudel, who gave me knowledge and opportunities with total generosity; And Alejandra Rebora, my companion, the person who supported me and always helped me. Without them it would not have been the same”.

“Then, a special thanks to the clubs and national federations that chose me and trusted me. To their directors. To all the colleagues I had in each of the technical bodies that we make up,” added Lamas who he garnered 11 titles in a career that had him as national coach of Argentina and Japan.

“And in the end (but not the last), the players, the main reason why I started being a coach: to teach the kids of my club, Deportivo San Andrés, how to play. That’s when I fell in love with basketball, with teaching and being part of a team,” said the architect of Argentina’s “Golden Generation.”

Finally, the 57-year-old former coach added: “I proudly say goodbye to the road I have traveled, knowing that I devoted myself passionately and that I gave everything of myself in the search for constant improvement. I did not hold anything back. It is time to learn new things and work in sport from another role”.

Lamas was coach of the Sport Cañadense, Olimpia de Venado Tuerto, Boca, San Lorenzo, Ben Hur, Libertad and Obras Basket clubs in Argentina, while in Spain he took charge of Real Madrid, TAU Cerámica and Alicante.

During his career he won the National Basketball League five times, once with Boca, Ben Hur and Libertad and twice with San Lorenzo.

Although his coaching career is considered outstanding, his main performance was with the Argentine National Team between 1997-1999 and 2011-2014, periods in which the Golden Generation shone.
