Professional golfer Sepp Straka missed his second win on the prestigious PGA Tour by a hair’s breadth. The 28-year-old Viennese had done well after a birdie on the penultimate hole at the $8 million RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, but with a bogey on the 18th he missed the play-off in which the American Jordan Spieth should prevail against his compatriot Patrick Cantlay.
Straka ended the tournament in third place. It was the second-best result for the Austrian-American dual citizen, who won the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens in late February.
Of course, the demand has increased. The world number 53. disappointment was written all over his face because he would have loved to reach for the next trophy. After a bit of a gap, there was a great deal of joy about the remarkable performance.
“I’ve been training a lot, so my game is pretty good at the moment. At the moment, I’m characterized by consistency. Playing the Masters in Augusta was amazing. It’s a huge motivation to come back there. I want to continue in this form.” said Straka, whose third place was sweetened with prize money equivalent to 304,628 euros.
The University of Georgia graduate needed a total of 272 shots for the four rounds of the par-71 course. With twelve under par, Straka was just behind the later champion Spieth (-13), for whom the 13th title on the PGA Tour had a very special touch. It was his first after a dry spell of around a year and, more importantly, his first as a father.
“It feels incredibly good,” emphasized the 28-year-old world number ten from Texas, who had thrown his nerves away at the Masters a week earlier and missed the cut. “The worst feeling I can remember as a golfer. Luckily it doesn’t take long before you get the next chance,” reported Spieth.
Matthias Schwab finished 59th at the RBC Heritage. “It was good to have made the cut in this tournament with 132 players,” explained the 27-year-old from Styria. “But the scoring could have been better.”
