In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper “Corriere della Sera”, Goggia was asked whether there are homosexual athletes in the ski circus. The 29-year-old replied: “One or the other for the women. I don’t think so for the men. They have to drive over the Streif in Kitzbühel.”
That statement got the Italian world-class skier a lot of trouble. Even the Italian Secretary of State Ivan Gasparotto commented on Goggia’s controversial opinion: “According to Sofia Goggia, a homosexual man is not able to contest a departure,” the politician said on Twitter.
In addition, according to Goggia, it is wrong for transgender people to ride with women: “In sport, a man who transforms into a woman has physical characteristics, including on a hormonal level, that enable him to perform better. So I don’t think it’s right.”
In the meantime, the 29-year-old has publicly apologized for her statements. “I’m sorry and I apologize to anyone who felt offended by my sentences. When I said them, I didn’t mean to be discriminatory in any way,” she posted on Twitter.
