The reason for this is a saying that Nagelsmann gave at the press conference before the Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund. Johann Eitzenberger, chairman of the Bavarian Fire Brigade Association, pointed out to the “Bild” newspaper that 320,000 volunteer firefighters in Bavaria were on duty 24 hours a day at an hourly wage of EUR 0.00. “We are dismayed by the statement because it discredits the commitment of our rescuers.” He invited Julian Nagelsmann to take a look at a volunteer fire station in Bavaria “to clear up any misunderstandings”.
Hartmut Ziebs, former Vice President of the World Fire Brigade Association, also has little sympathy for Nagelsmann’s words: “In contrast to highly paid football professionals, firefighters only have one chance to save lives. For us there is no second leg.” Nagelsmann should reconsider whether he can better motivate his players with the spirit of the volunteer firefighters. His advice to the Bayern coach: “Think first, then talk!”
The coach has not yet commented on whether Nagelsmann accepts the invitation and visits a fire station.
