What is going on with Novak Djokovic (34)? The world number one lost the final of his home tournament in Belgrade on Sunday 2: 6, 7: 6, 0: 6 against the Russian Andrey Rublev (24). At the press conference after the match, the Serb surprised with disturbing statements: “I can only imagine that it is due to the illness that struck me a few weeks ago. It’s an individual sport, if something goes wrong the engine can’t run.”
The 20-time Grand Slam winner did not want to say exactly which mysterious disease it is: “It is not a corona virus and I do not want to give any further details, but it is something that affects my metabolism. It’s unsettling to have that feeling on the pitch. I didn’t feel tired until the end of the second set. The game to make it 5-4 was a long game and that’s when I started not feeling good. That also happened to me in Monte Carlo.”
With a view to the French Open (May 22 – June 5), Djokovic seems quite optimistic again, says: “Things are progressing slowly but surely. Paris is the big goal and I hope to be fit and ready to play best-of-five matches there.”
