Conmebol sanctioned River for a racist act by a fan

In images that went viral on social media, a fan made xenophobic gestures against Fortaleza fans, peeling a banana and treating them like monkeys.

For a similar act, although without the fruit in question, a Boca supporter was arrested in the game that the “xeneize” lost to Corinthians in São Paulo, by making gestures against the “Timao” fans.

In turn, River, after learning of the fact through social networks, announced that he was identifying the fan who made the gestures, to apply the corresponding sanction.

In an official statement Conmebol explained that the fine on River of 30 thousand dollars, “for the infraction of articles 9 and 17 of the Disciplinary Code” of the entity.

“The amount of this fine will be automatically deducted from the amount to be received by the CONMEBOL Club for Television or Sponsorship rights,” added the highest soccer body in South America.

In addition, River received a warning, since “in case of reiteration of any infraction of sports discipline of the same or similar nature to the one that has caused this procedure, the provisions of Art. 31 of the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code will apply, and the consequences that could derive from it.

The Conmebol, also, indicated in an official statement that it considers “absolutely unacceptable any manifestation of racism and other forms of violence in its tournaments.”

“It assumes and will always assume its share of responsibility in the fight against all kinds of discrimination. The fight against this scourge occupies a central place in the concerns and work of CONMEBOL, which is evidenced in the multiple awareness campaigns and actions of massive scope, as well as in the application of penalties to those who incur in these despicable practices,” he added.

In this sense, he commented that he will promote “changes in the regulations to INCREASE AND HARDEN the penalties in cases of racism.”
