Who is the new champion of Argentine surfing?

The talented young man from La Plata, a resident of Mardel since he was 4 years old, goes down the cliff with a smile, he does not seem to feel the pressure when he descends that ladder to nothingness that deposits him on the stones and from there he jumps into the sea, confident. In the waves he shows the essence of him: powerful surfing, high concentration and excellent decision making. He looks like a veteran. He is also not sorry that his brother, Ignacio, is in the fight or that, in the final, he faces the last champion, Tomás López Moreno. He is focused and imposing with authority. His colleagues applaud him and lift him up on a litter. The Quiksilver Team star has achieved it…

“I don’t know why I made it… I almost lost in the first round, but I was able to go from low to high. I left feeling good, surfing and competing. Having been third in the ranking of the last circuit and, in addition, having won the last date gave me a plus of confidence. I felt that I was at the level, that I could achieve it, that it was a matter of having consistency in the tournaments…”, explains who had already been Argentine champion in U18 and U16. The same thing happened in Ladies, a double: Ornella Pellizzari won the 19th edition of this legendary tournament -presented by Ford and its top-of-the-range Mavericks- and, incidentally, the 12th national title. Ratifying the growth of the new litter, Cocó Cianciarulo (18 years old) was second, who closed as runner-up.

The Roxy rider, daughter of the famous musician Sr Flavio, has been dominating junior tournaments for years, being champion in all categories, including two at the same time. She now travels to represent Argentina in the ISA Junior World Cup, in El Salvador. “It was a great weekend and a very good result, which confirms my progress and invites me to continue for more”, she said.

They were dream days on the cliffs. The first day had sun and a perfect sea, which brought together nearly 1,000 people in this natural grandstand that allowed them to enjoy elite surfing and, at the same time, the delicious food prepared by chef Rodo Puente, all accompanied by music. wave and seamless organization. The second, cloudier and with a more difficult sea, powerful and with waves of two meters, was also in tune with the different essence that this spot has. “It is, without a doubt, the most challenging event on the calendar. The place has a special mystique, the cliff, the descent down the stairs, the rope climb, the path with photos of the champions, the public that goes and now with the monument to a legend like Carlitos Di Pace… All this combination makes it really unique”, admitted the men’s champion.

Each tournament that passes shows how the witness is passing from the hands of the Passeri, the Siri, the Santamaría and the Rodríguez to the boys of the new generation, in addition to the growth of the girls. “It is important that this happens and is maintained, that enlarging the base is not a saying but an action and a commitment of all… Today we have a litter of 12/13-year-old boys that we never had, another 18/19-year-old that they take this seriously and good international representatives are beacons, in addition to increasingly better schools and clubs with coaches to facilitate and promote this evolution”, analyzed Martín Passeri.

The most successful surfer at the national level (6) is also the Director of the High Performance Surfing Center at the Honu Beach resort and the coach of several new jewels, such as Ruggiero.

“The most remarkable thing about these guys that I have to accompany today is the ability to face great challenges with maturity and commitment. Juan Cruz is a talented person with a great connection with the sea and with what he does. In the water he is very patient, he has a very balanced temper and a great ability to adapt to any terrain. In this tournament he didn’t rush any decisions, he had a great selection of waves and he surfed very well when the sea got rough. He is physically very good and has known how to use his strengths at key moments”, he completed with his always shrewd look.

“I don’t know what’s special about me, I think nothing (laughs). I just like to surf and people say that I do it well… Of course, this came after a long process: I surf since I was a child and along the way I have had a lot of support, mainly from my family, which has allowed me to dedicate myself to this, to be able to travel and, at the same time, study. Also that of Martín, with whom I have been coming since I was 12 years old. We live a lot together: trips, training, tournaments… he has given me everything, as a coach and as a person ”said JC, who experienced a particular situation in this tournament for having to fight the tournament with his brother, Nacho (17).

“It was weird, almost funny, with mixed emotions, because I wanted him to lose (laughs) and, at the same time, to do well,” he acknowledged. His younger brother, Facundo (11), another who brings them, encouraged from the cliff. “He is also running very well, with a very nice style. He is a bit of a bastard, I always tell him to have fun, ”JC contributed, late in the afternoon, after finishing his first year of Kinesiology. “The three brothers, in addition to being talented, are people with a life around the water and a lot of support from their parents for them to do so. They dedicate hours to surfing, being coherent and simple people”, added Passeri.

Now, for Ruggiero, the need to ratify is coming and, why not, make an international leap. “I would like to travel and be able to go to a tournament abroad. It is the next step, a goal that I set for myself,” he admitted. Conditions are plenty.
