Canelo Álvarez could not with Bivol and fell for the second time in his career

Bivol, owner of the belt since 2017, made his ninth defense with authority – the three juries saw him as the winner 115-113 – and achieved the most important victory in his history against who is considered one of the best exponents of boxing pound for pound.

Álvarez, 31, felt a discomfort that he had not experienced since his previous and only defeat with the American Floyd Mayweather, in September 2019, but far from repenting, he proposed a rematch to the Russian.

“I don’t feel ashamed because I look for those challenges that many don’t for fear of losing. It can’t stay like this,” said “Canelo” (57-2-2, 39 KOs), who did not look for excuses in the change of category.

“In boxing you win and lose, today I had to lose. I felt the weight but it is no excuse. I tried to do many things but he is a great champion,” he admitted to an audience disappointed by the defeat.

Bivol (20-0-0, 11 KOs) accepted the Mexican’s challenge (“No problem, let’s talk about a rematch”) and valued his victory in a fight with “everything against”.

The Russian was the center of criticism prior to the fight because of his nationality, now banned in almost the entire sports field due to the military invasion in Ukraine, and also because of his boxing record, for some below what “Canelo” deserved.

“I want to be treated like a champion,” demanded Bivol, who despite being the defending champion of the category, was relegated to the background. His entry into the ring occurred before that of the Mexican challenger, received by a mariachi band and with fireworks.

“I know how much people love ‘Canelo’ and it’s normal. He is the greatest fighter in the world. Champion in four categories. Of course people are on his side. I am happy to have proven that I am the best in my category”, Bivol took over.
