Today, seven years later, the growth of the discipline has not stopped, and it is a historical moment where small and large achievements have been made. However, there is still a long way to go to achieve full gender equality in sport as well.
In the Argentinathree years ago, the Argentine Football Association officially announced the “professionalization of women’s football”. The salaries and the collective agreement contemplated at least eight First Division players with a contract and salaries equivalent to those of a First C footballer.
From 2021, clubs must have at least 12 professional contracts, but the basic salary of each player remains equivalent to what a player of the First C. Also, from this year the AFA requires that all First Division squads have a Reserve with players under 19 years of age and a U16 youth division team. The fact to note is that the matches of the Women’s Soccer League are broadcast freely and free of charge by Public TV Y SportsTV.
Currently, of the 21 teams participating in the First Division Tournament, only five have more than 20 players with a professional contract: Boca, River, San Lorenzo, Racing Y Gymnastics Silver, that is to say that 55% of the soccer players are professionals. And a not minor fact is that the vast majority of these players have another job to survive.
This semi-professionalism is also reflected in the Argentine national teamwhich, despite the achievement of participating in a World Cup after 12 years, France 2019, with audience and broadcast records on television and social networks, is today No. 34 in the ranking of FIFA far from the best South American position that is Brazillocated in ninth place.
The women’s fight was strengthened and united in a single voice: equal rights, gender and opportunities both on and off the field. Everything achieved so far is thanks to the work of thousands of women who defend the right to play ball and that does not stop. Let’s celebrate what has been achieved and continue for what remains to be done.
