For the major athletics nations, relay races at major events have always been a matter of prestige. A long-term project could also be launched in Austria. A quartet over the 4×100 meters is to be built up around Olympic starter Susanne Walli, otherwise a lone fighter over 400 and 200 meters. The first intermediate goal would be the European Championships in Munich in August.
At the meeting in Geneva next Saturday, another attempt will be made for a place at the European Championships. “The best 16 nations are there. As we are currently 18th, we have a realistic chance of getting the ticket,” says Walli, who is still in action tomorrow in Slovakia for the stadium round.
Walli, her club colleague from the TGW Zehnkampf Union, Johanna Plank as well as Magdalena Lindner, Karin Strametz and Viktoria Willhuber are in the squad. The fact that Ina Huemer, the state champion over 100 and 200 meters, ended her career this year in May was of course a small step backwards for the project. “But we are a young team and can be expanded,” says 26-year-old Walli, who is also confident about the short sprint distance. “I can run the 100 in a decent time.”
Dadic jumps in Innsbruck
All-around athlete Ivona Dadic will also compete in the 18th edition of the Golden Roof Challenge for pole vaulters and long jumpers on Saturday in downtown Innsbruck. Discus thrower Lukas Weißhaidinger is back tomorrow in the Diamond League in Rome on the hunt for points. The flow that is still missing, like that of the Slovenian double winner Kristjan Ceh, should now start. “I’m attacking fully and I’m assuming that it will finally work with the top three.” The Innviertler is confident that he throws more than a meter further on average than in 2021.
