Austria’s discus ace Lukas “Luki” Weißhaidinger made the long-awaited leap onto the podium at the third Diamond League meeting in Rome. After places four (in Birmingham) and five (in Rabat), the 30-year-old from the Innviertel region finished second in Rome with a jump of 68.30 meters.
The Slovenian Kristjan Ceh, who secured his third triumph en suite with 70.92 meters, is currently unbeatable. Olympic champion Daniel Stahl (Swe), on the other hand, came in third this time (65.87 m) and didn’t have a good match against Weißhaidinger, who wants to set the next scent mark on the Continental Tour on Sunday. Namely in Sollentuna, 13 kilometers north of Stockholm. There, Stahl holds the stadium record with an impressive 71.29 meters.
“I notice the strain on the journey. But I’m happy with how things are going. I’ve gotten significantly better – that surprises me myself,” said Weißhaidinger. “In terms of width, I’m about one and a half meters stronger than in 2021,” calculated the Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo.
The immediate preparation for the World Championships in Eugene (from July 15th) begins on Monday. The Upper Austrian will contest the fourth Diamond League meeting in Stockholm (June 30th) from training. He practically has a ticket for the final event in Zurich (Letzigrund) in his pocket.
