After his total loss in Monte Carlo, Mick Schumacher is on probation in Formula 1. “Baku will feel big compared to Monaco, that’s for sure,” said the Haas driver before the Grand Prix in Azerbaijan on Sunday (1 p.m. / live ServusTV). The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher is accompanied by growing criticism and doubts. In the street canyons of Baku he can’t afford to make another mistake.
Team boss Günther Steiner warned with regard to the Canadian guest appearance scheduled only a week later: “It will be even more difficult if there is damage to the car. So let’s hope that nothing breaks in Baku.” Schumacher, in particular, can understand this as a clear instruction. In Saudi Arabia and Monaco he completely destroyed his car. There were also accidents in Bahrain and Miami.
The misadventures of the German have already cost his team well over a million euros this year, according to specialist magazines. New chassis, new transmission parts, many hours of work – that hurts the clammy Haas racing team in particular. In the worst case, there is less money left for the further technical development of the cars. “Mick has to learn that such mistakes shouldn’t happen,” wrote Uncle Ralf Schumacher in his Sky column.
In addition to Williams driver Nicholas Latifi, Mick Schumacher is the only driver who is still without a point this year. It hurts all the more because his new teammate Kevin Magnussen has already gained 15 points. “There’s no hiding in Formula 1. Only results count. Mick knows that too,” said Steiner.
Yesterday in the first practice session, which Monaco winner Sergio Perez (Red Bull) won, Schumacher had to fight again. He had to park his car at the side of the track after less than ten minutes after a water leak.
