The former national soccer player Lukas Podolski misses progress and also enthusiasm in the DFB team of national coach Hansi Flick.
“The team is on the spot and stagnating. You don’t really know where you are and where you stand. I’m missing a bit of passion, emotions, the positive mood in and around the team,” said the former professional of the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”. “The way it was in my time, for example,” said the 130-time national player.
“The national team has to manage to spark enthusiasm again,” said the 37-year-old Podolski, who has just extended his contract with the Polish first division club Gornik Zabrze by a year. In his opinion, however, Hansi Flick is absolutely the right coach for this.
The 2014 world champion sees no quick solution to the current problems in attack. “We haven’t had the classic center forward, who emits a great goal threat, for a few years,” said Podolski. “Miro Klose and Mario Gomez were the last of their kind.”
At the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year, Germany is not one of the top favorites from “Poldi’s” point of view, “but certainly one of the extended circle of favorites,” he said. “We must not make ourselves smaller than we are.”
