After a new report on plans for a prominent mini-tournament before the new 2024 European Cup season, the European Football Union has confirmed such considerations.
The idea was discussed by the UEFA Committee for Club Competitions, but there has not yet been a formal decision on the concept, the association told the German Press Agency.
The French sports newspaper “L’Equipe” published more information on Tuesday about the considerations that the AP news agency reported a month ago. Accordingly, before the 2024 Champions League season, the defending champion could hold a mini-tournament in knockout format in the USA with three other strong teams from the past competition in mid-August.
According to the newspaper, the winners of the Europa League and Conference League could compete for the European Supercup, which has so far been played by the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.
From the summer of 2024, the Champions League will be increased from 32 to 36 participants and will be played in a new format with four groups of nine in the preliminary round.
