That is why Platense came out to play with the possibility at hand of reaffirming himself as the only leader in the championship and Gimnasia knowing that if he won he would climb to the first step of the competition in the company of his classic rival, Estudiantes, and Newell’s Old Boys.
Thus the expectations then, the two went out in search of the three points with a 3-4-1-2 at home and a classic 4-3-3 on the visit.
And the first half was always back and forth, with a permanent attempt by those led by Omar De Felippe to get from the sides, while those led by Néstor Gorosito tried to play the old style that “Pipo” knew in his time as a footballer : “one short and one long”.
For the first action, the handling of the Uruguayan Brahian Alemán stood out in the middle zone and for the second his qualifications for the speed of the Colombian Johan Carbonero, who has next destination in Racing Club.
That is why the chances were spread out, although they were not compatible with the effectiveness that was needed to break two well-stabilized defenses, who knew how to disrupt dangerous actions before their respective goalkeepers had to intervene.
But in any case, when they were called to intervene both goalkeeper Marcos Ledesma in those of Vicente López and Rodrigo Rey in those of La Plata, they always responded with solvency.
And this was extended to the complement, when both teams stood firm on their initial positions and never gave up their chances of keeping the three points, even despite ending the night empty-handed.
But midway through the final stage Gimnasia saw those chances cut short when his scorer, Cristian Tarragona, retired injured, since his replacement, Franco Soldano, does not have the same imprint as the ex-Platense.
And in return Platense sought with a former Gimnasia y Esgrima like Horacio Tijanovich to mirror his rival in terms of what Carbonero contributed, which by the way was quite little tonight, to the point that after half an hour he was relieved by whom Gorosito considers that will be his ideal replacement: Lautaro Chávez.
And within two minutes of being on the field, Chávez backed up his coach’s vision by converting the winning goal from the right edge of the area with a left-footed cross from mid-height.
That is why Gorosito hit his chest, applauded the 21-year-old scorer from the Buenos Aires town of General Lavalle, while shouting at his aide-de-camp, Gustavo Zapata: “I told you, I told you…”.
However, Platense seems to have reached a certain level of maturity and without Mauro Zárate on the court, after a hardly discreet performance, he quickly reached a draw with another player who came from the substitutes’ bench, also 21 years old, such as Juan Cruz Esquivel.
The soccer player from Santa Fe, a native of Cañada Rosquín, the birthplace of the musician León Gieco, who came from Talleres, Córdoba, in his twentieth game with the “squid” shirt, scored a great goal with a low shot and crossed from the right after a “jugadon” personal left in which he left three rivals on the way to pure feint.
This was Esquivel’s first goal in Vicente López’s team and ended up satisfying the local fans who believed everything was lost a couple of minutes before and to a lesser extent the visit, which although it did not reach that first step to which it continues clinging his rival tonight, once again demonstrated that with this good performance achieved under the guidance of Gorosito, in the future he will harvest more ripe than green.
