Canadian golfer Adam Hadwin surprisingly leads after day one of the US Open.
His round of 66 on the par-70 Brookline County Club course put him a shot ahead of a chasing group including former world number one Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland. Also in the group are Englishman Callum Tarren, Swede David Lingmerth, South African MJ Daffue and American Joel Dahmen.
Of the more prominent golfers, after McIlroy, the American Dustin Johnson was the best. The 2016 US Open winner, who defected from the PGA Tour to the new LIV Tour, was tied for seventh place with a round of 68. For Phil Mickelson, the heavyweight among golfers who had turned their backs on the PGA Tour, only the second tournament after a four-month break did not go well. On his 52nd birthday he only played a round of 78. Only seven other players were worse.
The two German participants, Yannik Paul and Marcel Schneider, didn’t fare much better in their major debut. Paul played a round of 77, Schneider tied with Mickelson on a 78.
