The Bundesliga season starts at the beginning of August – and the planners of the DFL have tried to find attractive duels for the first matchday. FC Bayern have to start at Eintracht Frankfurt and there is a first derby right away.
The men’s Bundesliga season starts very early this year. The reason is clear: the World Cup in Qatar begins at the end of November, which is why the Bundesliga is taking a two-month winter break much earlier than usual. On Friday afternoon, the German Football League presented the game plan for the first matchday from August 5th to 7th. The exact kick-off times have yet to be announced, only the opening game on Friday evening (8.30 p.m.) has been set. There, Eintracht Frankfurt welcomes the champions FC Bayern.
Otherwise, it is clear that the planners have tried to make the game day as attractive as possible. Runners-up Borussia Dortmund will play Bayer Leverkusen at home, who were third in the table last season. A highlight is the Berlin derby: Union Berlin, the Europa League participants, has a home game against Hertha BSC Berlin, who have almost been relegated.
Climbers have to go away
The promoted teams have to play away: Werder Bremen travels to VfL Wolfsburg and Schalke 04 plays against 1. FC Köln. Otherwise: Borussia Mönchengladbach hosts TSG Hoffenheim, VfB Stuttgart plays against RB Leipzig, VfL Bochum hosts Mainz 05 and FC Augsburg plays SC Freiburg.
The first district derby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke takes place on the 7th matchday, on the 9th matchday there is a German Clasico between Bayern and Dortmund. The DFL Supercup between champions Bayern Munich and cup winners RB Leipzig will take place on June 30th. July, i.e. a week before the start of the Bundesliga. After the 15th matchday, which takes place from November 11th to 13th, the winter break begins, which lasts until January 20th.
