The German swimming team won 14 medals at the Para World Championships in Madeira – four times gold, six times silver and four times bronze.

Outstanding at the event for the disabled athletes was the performance of Paralympic champion Elena Semechin, who, despite ongoing chemotherapy after her brain tumor operation, only missed the world title over 200 meters breaststroke by 0.02 seconds and finished second at the start.

On the seventh and final day of the competition, the German team was awarded three more medals. Tanja Scholz won gold over 200 meters freestyle in the starting class S4, Denise Grahl swam over 100 meters freestyle (S7) to bronze. Josia Topf was also third in his class (S3) over 100 meters freestyle.

Like Semechin, Scholz also achieved something big: The 37-year-old from Elmshorn won a medal in all five competitions, three times gold over 50, 100 meters and 200 meters freestyle (S4) and silver over 50 meters backstroke and 150 meters individual medley. She also swam a world record over 200 meters in 2:53.02 minutes. “I had a difficult time and on the 200 meters I can just swim out all the frustration,” said Scholz, who has been paralyzed since a riding accident two years ago and is in a wheelchair.
