The English golf pro Matthew Fitzpatrick has won his first major title with the triumph at the US Open in Brookline/Massachusetts. The 27-year-old won by a stroke over the American Will Zalatoris, who missed a jump-off after missing a putt on the last hole by a hair’s breadth. The world number one, Scottie Scheffler, also tied for second place after a round of 67.
Fitzpatrick, who has never won a tournament on the PGA Tour before, received $3.15 million in prize money and jumped the rankings from 18th to 10th place. The Viennese Sepp Straka, who clearly failed to make the cut in 125th place, fell back in the world rankings from 51st to 54th place. But that doesn’t interest Fitzpatrick: he enjoys his success “on golden soil” to the fullest.
Nine years ago, the shooting star won the amateur title in Brookline, only the great Jack Nicklaus, who was one of the first to congratulate the US Open coup by phone, had managed a double feat of this kind.
“The feeling is out of this world. If you achieve something like that, you can retire tomorrow a happy man,” said Fitzpatrick with tears in his eyes.
