Müller, who after his active career also worked for many years as a coach in the Bavarian youth division, leaves behind his wife Uschi and a daughter.
The legendary striker scored 68 goals in 62 international matches for the German national team. He became European champion in 1972 and world champion in 1974, and in the World Cup final in Munich against the Netherlands, Müller scored the 2-1 winning goal.
