The swimmer sank to the bottom of the pool and was fortunate that her coach reacted with quick wit.
Andrea Fuentes jumped into the water herself after seeing Alvarez sink. She brought the swimmer back to the surface and heaved her out of the pool with another man. Paramedics provided first aid at the edge of the pool. There was an almost eerie silence in the swimming pool during the dramatic scene. The good news: 30 minutes after the incident, a supervisor from the US team announced that Alvarez was fine.

“The doctors have checked all vital functions and everything is normal: heart rate, oxygen, sugar levels, blood pressure – everything is okay,” Andrea Fuentes, herself a four-time Olympic medalist in synchronized swimming, gave the all-clear on Instagram. Alvarez will now take a day off, after which the doctors should decide whether she can compete again.
The fainting spell was triggered by stress. However, Fuentes did not want to attach too much importance to the incident: “Sometimes we forget that this also happens in other high-performance sports. We have all seen pictures of how some athletes don’t make it to the finish line and others help them to get there.”
The 25-year-old synchronized swimmer has often lost consciousness in the water. She also collapsed during a qualifying competition for the Olympic Games, and her trainer had to intervene to save her there too. Her mother said at the time that Alvarez had passed out in the water several times during training.
