Ukrainian refugees from the districts of merton Y Wandsworthas well as its sponsors and charity partners, will be eligible for tickets, as reported by the All England Club and the Lawn Tennis Association.
The donation of £250,000 will be done on the initiative Tennis Plays for Peace Yet the British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal on behalf of Wimbledonwhich starts on Monday.
“On the eve of the championship, I think it is important that we recognize those who are suffering so much due to the unrelenting conflict imposed on Ukraine.”said the executive director of the LTA, Scott Lloydit’s a statement.
Wimbledon will be a 14-day tournament starting this year, with matches scheduled in the so-called “Middle Sunday”traditionally a rest day, as organizers no longer need a full day to get the slopes in shape due to improved technology.
That day is also known as the “People’s Sunday”because on a few occasions in the past general tickets have been put up for sale when rain delays have caused some matches to be postponed.
“They (Ukrainian refugees) will be joined on ‘Middle Sunday’ by local residents, NHS and social care COVID heroes, and a range of schools, charities and community groups,” the two associations said.
