After Gerard Pique has already agreed to a pay cut, three more of his Barca colleagues are now following.
After Gerard Pique (34), the three other members of the FC Barcelona team council Sergio Busquets (33), Jordi Alba (32) and Sergi Roberto (29) will forego part of their salary in order to support the financially troubled club.
“The other captains will soon do the same. Due to time constraints, I had to be the first so we could register the players. The captains always intended to make the adjustments the club needed. We are proud of this decision,” said Pique after the 4-2 opening win against Real Sociedad San Sebastian. Barca announced on Friday that Busquets and Alba were “fully prepared to work together”.
Thanks to Pique: Barca were able to register Depay and Garcia
Pique’s salary was cut to allow Barca to register new signings Memphis Depay, 27, and Eric Garcia, 20, in accordance with Spanish league rules. Both were in the starting line-up against San Sebastian.
The salary cap issued by the league was the big problem for Barca in negotiations to continue working with Lionel Messi. The club was unable to agree on a new contract with the Argentine under the specifications. The former world footballer therefore moved to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
